INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR ON MARINE
Kamis, 19-Mei-2011, 13:47:14 by Beny Ruhiman (Sisfo)

Background
Indonesia is the largest archipelagic nation in the world with ±17,500 islands consist of 5 main islands and 30 groups of small islands. The total area of Indonesia region is 5.1 million km2, consists of more than 3.1 million km2 of waters (61%) and approximately 2 million km2 of lands (39%), with coastline length of 81,000 km. Should the Exclusive Economic Zones with area of 2.7 million km2 be included, the total area of Indonesia becomes 7.8 million km2.
Based on the geographic position, coastal and seas within Indonesia region are vulnerable to the climate change, especially due to the sea surface temperature and sea level rises. From the current result, climate change significantly influences some global and regional scales natural phenomena such as increasing the number of tropical cyclones occurrence and El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) as well as shifting of monsoonal pattern. During the 1997 El Niño, the increasing of sea surface temperature in the Southeast Asia has triggered a serious problem to the coral reef ecosystem. Based on report from the Wetlands International, about 18% of the coral reef ecosystem in the Southeast Asia waters has been destroyed due to this phenomenon. In the Indonesian waters itself, coral bleaching has been found in several areas such as in the eastern Sumatera, Java, Bali, and Lombok. Meanwhile, around 90% to 95% of coral reefs at depth of 25 meter in the Seribu Islands have experienced bleaching.
In 2009, during the World Ocean Conference in Manado, the government of the Republic of Indonesia has launched Coral Triangle Initiative (CTI) action plans for coral reefs, fisheries and food security focusing on community based sustainable development as well as poverty alleviation and improves the equity. In order to follow up these action plans, by mentioning the facts and current conditions related to the impacts of climate change to coral reef ecosystem, the Institute for Marine Research and Observation, Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries in cooperation with Study Program of Oceanography, Institute of Technology Bandung and Postgraduate Study Program of Environmental Science, Udayana University will hold an International Seminar on Marine with a theme "Sustainable Marine and Coastal Resources Management in the Coral Triangle Initiative's (CTI) Region". This event will be held to bring together the researchers, academics and policy makers to formulate and conduct necessary mitigation and adaptation plans to preserve the coral reef ecosystem in the CTI region.
Objectives
The objectives of the seminar are:
1. Discussing recent research and development results in the field of oceanography, climate change, and marine and coastal resources management in the CTI region.
2. Sharing information and knowledge among researchers, policy makers and society of recent condition as well as research and development results related to climate change and its impact to marine ecosystem.
3. Developing knowledge based decision making to support marine sector development in Indonesia.
Theme
The theme of this seminar is "Sustainable Marine and Coastal Resources Management in the Coral Triangle Initiative's (CTI) Region" and divided into 3 (three) sub themes, i.e.:
1. The ocean dynamics in the CTI region; covers discussions about research and development activities related to Indonesia throughflow, climate and global ocean circulation, ocean observing systems and marine technologies for climate change mitigation and adaptation.
2. The vulnerability of CTI region to climate change; covers discussions about research and development activities related to the vulnerability of marine and coastal ecosystem in the CTI region due to climate change.
3. Marines and coastal resources management in the CTI region; covers discussions about research and development as well as community based activities to support the sustainability of marine and coastal ecosystem in the CTI region.
